Joris Scheers new ECTP President

Joris Scheers, general coordinator Real Estate Policy at the Department of Public Governance and transition manager ‘Sustainable and Creative Cities’ of the ViA project, has been elected President of the European Council of Spatial Planners/Conseil Européen des urbanistes (ECTP-CEU), the umbrella organisation of European professional organisations for urban and spatial planners.

Scheers is a spatial planner, a sociologist and the former president of the 'Vereniging voor Ruimte en Planning' (Flemish Society of Spatial Planners). Today he is also a visiting professor at KU Leuven, and chairman of the municipal committee for spatial planning (gecoro) of the city of Leuven. He wants to strengthen the European network in the coming years, renew the organisation and draw attention to the spatial challenges faced by Europe, such as the functioning of urban networks, the uncontrolled intake of open space, climate change and liveability.
